Project description
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is being increasingly questioned on efficiency grounds. In reaction, worldwide governments have been increasingly reforming EIA laws and regulations. Scholars, in Brazil and globally, are studying this phenomenon, but developments in this field remain limited. Preliminary studies indicate that, while it is clear the need for a “next generation” EIA, one that is more participative, technically rigorous, efficient, and oriented towards the long-term sustainability of impacted communities and the environment, the means to move towards this goal are still unclear. Some authors argue that current EIA regulatory changes have been marked by fragmented, simplistic and non-standardized measures that might have unintended negative consequences. The main objective of this Research Project is to identify opportunities for enhancing and standardizing federal-level EIA systems worldwide, using Canada and Brazil as the empirical contexts. The main products of this research project are academic articles, technical reports and online videos, which will all be disclosed here in this webpage. The reseach project started in Februrary 2019 and is expected to extend until December 2020.
